Cesme

Cesme, which is located at 94 km west of Izmir, is a pleasant resort with its medicinal hot springs and extreme quality of sand, sun and sea. Cesme, which becomes a crowded and lively city in the summer time, offers various kind of pleasure activities such as; yachting races, wind surfing, scuba diving and kite surfing etc. Being just 90 km away from Izmir International Adnan Menderes Airport is another significant advantage of Cesme as a resort area.

Cesme, which was known by the name Cyssus, was the harbour of the city of Erythrai that was located on the West coast of Anatolia. Erythrai, which had a pretty safe harbour, was a broad and important settlement center in the 6th century B.C. It had commercial ties with Egypt, Cyprus and western countries and fostered its trade. History of the oldest settlements Erythrai and Cesmekoy, which are in the borders of today’s Cesme, is dating back to 3000 B.C.

Due to strategic reasons Cesme was conquered and ruled by many states and cultures such as; Ionians, Persian Empire, Greek States, Roman Empire, Eastern Roman Empire, Seljukids, Aydinogullari and Ottomans etc. Therefore, historically, these lands served the Byzantines, the Ottomans, and gathered many cultures and civilizations ranging from the Persians to Greeks, Jewish to Albanians, Kazaks to Caucassians, Italians to Phoenicians. It has become the starting point of the Levant from the Western point of view and the last gate opening into the Western world in the Levantine perspective.
